Glasgow Data Analytics Startup Selected for GCHQ Mentoring Scheme

Chief Executive Adam Brown said Bellrock’s inclusion on the programme is a “vote of confidence” in the up-and-coming data analytics firm.

Glasgow-based data science firm, Bellrock Technology, is one of 10 startups to be mentored by GCHQ as part of its Innovation Co-Lab scheme.

The intelligence agency will provide a 12-week support programme for the selected startups, many of which are using artificial intelligence, data science and machine learning to keep people safe.

The GCHQ Innovation Co-Lab is a joint venture with The Landing, a tech mentorship hub based in MediaCityUK in Greater Manchester and global tech accelerator UP Ventures

As part of the programme, Bellrock will be given unique access to GCHQ technologists and industry experts to improve their products and receive business mentoring.

Participating companies will also have the chance to showcase their products to a panel comprised of industry leaders and investors at the end of the 12-week scheme.

A GCHQ spokesperson said the programme will play a crucial role in helping to keep UK businesses and consumers safe.

“This 12-week programme will give these companies, using cutting-edge tech, unique access to GCHQ technologist to help hone their products – from helping to prevent the spread of fake news to countering people trafficking,” they added.

Bellrock specialises in turning data science models into real-world business applications, with its predictive analytics platform, Lumen, enabling organisations to speed up the deployment of data models.

Co-founded by Professor Stephen McArthur and Adam Brown, the latter of whom serves as Chief Executive, Bellrock technology spun-out from Strathclyde University’s Institute for Energy and Environment in 2012.

Bellrock’s inclusion in the Co-lab Initiative comes amid an exciting period for the Glasgow-based firm. In June, it welcomed a six-figure funding boost and appointed industry veteran Steve Langmead to the company board.

Chief Executive Adam Brown said the company’s inclusion on the programme is a vote of confidence for the “unique approach the company offers in delivering data analytics”.

“I and everyone at Bellrock Technology are delighted to be the only Scottish company invited to take part in the GCHQ Innovation Co-Lab,” he said. “It is an incredible opportunity for us.”
